Zero to One & Beyond

For 15 years, I’ve turned ideas from whiteboard doodles into products that drive results. I’ve worked with killer teams to build products people love, and created strategies to get them in front of the right audience.

Antler Bio

Using RNA to improve animal welfare

EpiHerd is Antler Bio’s first commercial product which helps milk farms benchmark the performance of their herd and find the underlying factors affecting them. Tackling these factors have shown to increase milk yields by 9.1% which in turn has a huge effect on profitability.

Problem

The basis of EpiHerd is a set of blood tests is performed on select animals in the herd to understand the epigenetics and how environmental factors are affecting how genes are expressed. We set out to build a platform to explain how the herd is performing and encourage corrective measures.

Since EpiHerd is in its infancy, it is important that the solution is lean and we can iterate on it based on feedback we get from the farmers. Based on previous user research, we knew it was critical for us to bridge the gap between Antler’s academic approach and the farmers’ practical sensibility.

Solution

The first iteration was a physical report which the team would go through with the farmer. This gave us an opportunity to understand how well the results were understood and what were the major gaps.

With the learnings from the physical reports, we built a platform for the farmers, which not only enables farmers to drill down deeper into the RNA results but also helps us build a consistent feedback loop with the farms. Simplifying complex topics through data visualization and thorough content are at the center of EpiHerd.

Results

  • Over 30 farms enrolled in the six months
  • Only one farm dropped out of the program
  • 9.1% increase in milk yield for earliest adopters

Primary Health

Administering over 8M COVID-tests

Primary Health is a platform for protecting community health. The company was founded during the pandemic to make it easier for communities to organize COVID testing and immunization at schools, community centers and workplaces.

Problem

Schools and other institutions reopening was pivotal moment as California Department of Public Health (CDPH) partnered with Primary to support COVID testing and immunization at these locations. The system would be used to coordinate the back-office for tests and vaccinations at schools and other similar sites.

The Primary platform had been used successfully in many locations previously but the user interface was rather complicated, especially as large batches of new locations would be added and the users would be varied (for example, school nurses).

Solution

The new administrator UI was specifically designed with a school nurse in mind and we could move much of the functionality that wasn’t relevant to them to a different user tier. This way the test administering flow remained simple as it would be repeated several times a day. Searching and adding records became the core tasks, optimized for tablet use with features like QR code scanning.

The platform scaled to over 10,000 locations, administering over 8 million tests under CDPH. Primary.Health’s platform was a key part of California’s reopening strategy and was instrumental in getting schools and other institutions back to normal.

Results

  • Scaled rapidly to over 10K locations
  • Over 8M tests have been administered
  • Key part of California’s reopening strategy

BetterDoctor

Verifying information on 320,000 medical providers quarterly

BetterDoctor improves provider data accuracy, reducing errors like incorrect phone numbers and closed clinic addresses, which hinder patients seeking care.

Problem

There was no single source of truth for provider data which often leads to patients finding incorrect information in their health plan’s directories about their providers. BetterDoctor set out to build an interface between medical providers and health plans to ensure that the information provided online is correct.

We also identified that providers and back-office personnel have to work with countless different systems and therefore capacity to learn yet another application was very limited.

Solution

We built a validation portal which aggregated data from multiple sources and presented it for review to the medical providers and staff. The corrections were then dispersed to all the participating health plans saving effort in submitting to each separately like they had before.

The validation portal used a wizard flow to ensure that the process was as easy as possible. Additionally, we focused on the portal not requiring a user account, instead using one-time access codes for easy access. We saw great success with the approach with over 80% of users completing the process and submitting corrections.

Results

  • Over 320,000 providers reviewed their information quarterly on the platform
  • Millions of individual corrections to ensure patients have the right information
  • BetterDoctor was acquired by Quest Analytics to compliment their product suite with provider data accuracy
